Canoe Atlas of the Little North
by Jonathan Berger and Thomas Terry
A landmark reference on a vast and historic area.
First Nations people call it Nishwawbe-Aski, "Land of the Original People." The area known as the Little North lies in Ontario and Manitoba, north of Lake Superior, east of Lake Winnipeg, west of James Bay and south of Hudson Bay. Early French fur traders referred to it as Le Petit Nord, as distinguished from the vast area west and north of Lake Winnipeg, Le Grand Nord. Despite its name, the Little North encompasses over 20 major lake and river systems within more than 500,000 square miles.
This remarkable atlas, in an oversize format, is a landmark publication -- the result of five decades of travel, research and documentation. Its first section provides an overview of the region's geography, the nature of its canoe routes, and the influence of natural and cultural history on those routes. Its second, larger section features annotated versions of 50 topographic maps derived from the well-known Canadian National Topographic System and constructed in digital form by the Geographic Information Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley. Annotations include points of interest, portages, rapids and difficult passages.
This atlas is sure to be treasured by canoeists everywhere and by anyone fascinated by the history of the North.

Lake Boats
Greg McDonnell
The romance of the great inland sea.
This large-format, full-color pictorial pays tribute to the historic ships still at work on the Great Lakes, from ancient cement boats such as the 100-year-old St Marys Challenger to venerable "straight-deckers," self-unloaders and 1,000-footers sailing under the familiar flags of prominent Great Lakes fleets: Algoma Central, Upper Lakes, Lower Lakes, American Steamship, Canada Steamship Lines and others.
With more than 170 photographs by the author and other fine transportation photographers, Lake Boats celebrates these mariners and working ships of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes. A thorough appendix cites exact identification, specifications and the history of each vessel included in the book.
An extraordinary range of images -- from close-up and interior views of engine rooms and pilothouses to panoramic scenes of these noble workhorse vessels sailing North America's inland seas -- makes Lake Boats a remarkable celebration.

Pan Am Clippers
James Trautman
Recapturing the fabulous era of flying boats.
For a world coming out of economic depression in the 1930s, the Pan American Airways Clipper "flying boats" symbolized elegance and luxury, adventure and romance. Illustrated with rare period photographs, vintage travel posters, magazine ads and colorful company brochures, this fascinating book covers every aspect of the fabulous era of Pan American's graceful clippers.
Like their maritime namesakes, the Clippers used the oceans to form a vast global network of travel routes. Pan Am founder Juan Trippe was a visionary who saw the importance of international travel to a changing world. His Clippers would play a key role in the evolution of transoceanic flight, setting time and distance records over the Atlantic and Pacific, providing airmail delivery between countries, and eventually serving the Allies as troop and cargo transports during World War II.
Pan Am Clippers permanently changed the world's concept of time and space by dramatically reducing travel time and opening up international air travel to the general public.
This fascinating, informative and richly illustrated book brings back another time and way of life.

Wilderness Ontario
Gary & Joanie McGuffin
A stunning celebration of Ontario's vast and diverse wilderness.
Ontario is wild. The province's more than 12 million people live in densely populated urban centers, but Ontario is larger than France and Spain combined. Over a quarter of a million lakes hold one third of the world's fresh water. No matter where you go in Ontario, you are never far from wilderness. Nobody knows this better than veteran adventurers Gary and Joanie McGuffin.
The McGuffins' Ontario is full of favorite places: rock promontory campsites where the swimming is perfect, lakes where loons and eagles nest, cliffs where peregrine falcons soar, ancient forests where only the sounds of nature are heard. Here, one can paddle whitewater rivers, sea kayak to distant granite islands, hike mountainous trails, and snowshoe the fresh forest trails left by foraging moose and wolves.
The diverse, wild beauty of Ontario is celebrated in this breathtaking collection of images taken during two decades of travel to every corner of the province.
